iwtv + intertextuality: love’s coming of age by edward carpenter

Surely in some subtle way if one person sincerely love another, heart and soul, that other becomes a part of the lover, indissolubly wrought into his being.* Mentally the two grow and become compact together. No thought that the lover thinks, no scene that he looks on, but the impress of his loved one in some way is on it — so that as long as he exists (here or anywhere) with his most intimate self that other is threaded and twined inseparable. So clinging is the relation. Perhaps in the outer world we do not always see such relations quite clear, and we think when death or other cause removes the visible form from us that the hour of parting has come. But in the inner world it is clear enough, and we divine that we and our mate are only two little petals that grow near each other on the great Flower of Eternity; and that it is because we are near each other in that unchanging world, that in the world of change our mortal selves are drawn together, and will be drawn always, wherever and whenever they may meet.

From Palestinian poet Najwan Darwish

i hope this is alright for me to add, but this poem references a line from one of hitler’s speeches ordering the genocide of polish jews. at the end of the speech, he justified the genocide by saying “who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the armenians?” in a very literal way, genocides are interconnected and used to justify one another. the holocaust was partially modeled after the united states’ genocide of indigenous people. british colonialism around the world had its roots in colonized ireland. this is why it is so important to remember the victims of all genocides across history, and why it is so important for oppressed peoples to stand together in solidarity.

The real tragedy of hotd is the missed opportunity for corlys and otto to be besties.

You can’t convince me that otto “I know what you are/the queen has not forgotten the love you once had for one another” hightower and corlys “I hope my son turns straight/I guess I’ll just adopt these white grandchildren” velaryon wouldn’t be friends, had their political interests aligned.

In an ideal world rhaenyra would be queen and hotd would be about corlys and otto petitioning for gay marriage to be legalized in westeros while simultaneously throwing their daughters at rhaenyra on every possible occasion.

corlys and otto if rhaenyra was queen

The first mirrors used by people were most likely to be a pool of water where they could observe their reflection and consider it magic. The first man-made mirrors were typically made of polished stone such as black volcanic glass obsidian and some examples of this kind of mirrors were found in Anatolia (modern-day Turkey) and have been dated to around 6000BC.

Long before production of glass mirror, the ancient Egyptians made mirrors of metal (copper, bronze, silver, tin, etc). They flattened sheets of metal and polished them until it could be used as a mirror. The mirror they produced had rounded shapes, sometimes with ornamentation on the back side, and usually with a handle so that one could easily use the mirror for self-viewing.

It is believed that glass mirrors were invented at Sidon in the first century AD. After the discovery of glass making, the Romans produced glass mirrors by finishing them with a metal layer. Pieces of glass covered with lead were also found in Roman graves dating from the second and third century. Glass mirrors were quite common in Egypt, Gaul, Germany and Asia. The earliest glass made mirrors were only about three inches in diameter and mirror manufactured from metal was still preferable by many people due to the fact that glass mirrors still did not have a very good reflection. They became more popular after the invention of a technique which allowed glass manufacturers to make flat thin glass and spread hot metal onto the glass without breaking it. The first mirrors were used almost exclusively by the ruling classes.

People have used mirrors both as household objects and as objects of decoration throughout history. The earliest made mirrors were hand mirrors; mirrors large enough to reflect the whole body appeared in the 1st century AD. Celts adopted hand mirrors from the Romans and by the end of the Middle Ages had become quite common throughout Europe. They were usually made of silver, though sometimes of polished bronze.
